Resource Lists: Adding Resources

Guidance & Best Practice for using resource lists

Adding the Talis Bookmark Extension to Chrome

Bookmarking resources for your lists is easy. The best way to do this is by using the Chrome Browser Extension for Talis. If you don't have Chrome installed on the computer you are using, you can download the browser.

Step 2: Installing the Talis bookmarking extension (2 mins)

Written instructions:

  • Visit the Chrome Web Store while using the Chrome Web Browser
  • Search for Talis using the store's search box
  • Select Talis Aspire Reading Lists Bookmarking

  • Click the blue Add to Chrome button.
  • A teal Talis square will now appear in the extensions section of your Chrome browser window
  • If you can't see the square, click on the puzzle piece icon in the area next to the three verticals dots in the upper right corner.
  • Click the thumbtack icon so it turns blue.

‘Add to My Bookmarks’ button - no longer supported

Due to increased security in browsers, those staff using the original ‘Add to My Bookmarks’ bookmarklet tool may find that it will stop working on a number of sites which you previously bookmarked from.

To prevent issues in bookmarking resources, we strong recommend using the new official Talis Bookmarking Extension instead. Please follow the instructions above on how to install the extension.

Bookmarking Journal Articles

Step 3: Adding items to resource lists (7 mins)

Written Instructions:

When bookmarking journal articles for your lists, there a few best practice tips to ensure your students have the best experience.

  • Try to bookmark from UR Library Search for journal articles, instead of bookmarking from the journal publisher's website.
    • This ensures that students will be prompted to log in only once, and eliminates students needing to choose which type of authentication system (e.g. OpenAthens vs Shibboleth) to use.
    • There will be some exceptions where you may need to bookmark directly from the platform. Only do this if it is absolutely necessary. Please contact libraryengagement@roehampton.ac.uk for further guidance if you are unsure.
      • Current Known Exceptions: Nexis

  • Before clicking Create or Create and Add to List check to see if the Online Resource box is ticked.
    • This ensures that the bookmark will display the 'View Online' button and redirect students to the article.

Bookmarking items not held at Roehampton

It is possible to search and bookmark items not held in the Library that will then get picked up by our Collections Team for ordering. UR Library Search can expand to search Libraries Worldwide. The easiest way to do this is:

  • Go to Library Homepage and search for a book title using speech marks around the title to ensure it brings up precise title results
  • If we don't have the item, you will then see a yellow box with a message asking "Do you want to expand your search to libraries worldwide?"

UR Library Search Yellow Text Alert "Do you want to expand your search to libraries

  • Click on the message to search other libraries and, if available, it will bring up the item record you can bookmark as normal with the message At other libraries worldwide.
  • Click on the title to open the record.
  • Click on Talis Bookmark Extension (instructions on how to install the Extension can be found under Adding the Chrome Bookmark Extension section of this Guide.
  • Please note: If the item shows as an eBook, this is not a guarantee we will be able to get it as an eBook due to licence restrictions and region selling rights.
  • Can't find the item? Trying searching using the ISBN number of the item using the following prefix - bn:9781786994257

Can I bookmark items from other websites?

We strongly recommend that you make use of the UR Library Search Libraries Worldwide filter for eBooks, books and journal articles. This allows us to capture more accurate item details for your resource lists than other webpages.

Bookmarking from other websites like publisher webpages also often results in an item being bookmarked as a webpage and therefore not being picked up our ordering processes.

If you are unable to find the item on UR Library Search and use another website to bookmark the item for your resource list, please pay close attention to the information that is pulled through and make any necessary amendments before saving. Also ensure the resource type is marked as "Book" as our ordering report only picks up items set as a "Book" resource type.

Reusing Your Own Existing Bookmarks

Using the Quick “Add Resource” option:

You can quickly add an item from your saved bookmarks by selecting the 'Add Resource' button that appears when you hover between items in the list:

Blue add resource line between two bookmarks on a resource list

Your most recent bookmarks then display in a pop-up screen (Show More or Search to find older bookmarks). Just select the item you want to add to the list, remembering to set Importance level. It is a good idea to re-use your bookmarks this way, rather than creating new ones for the same item, as the link will be more stable.

Caution: The Add Resource button is only recommended for adding items you have already bookmarked. When first adding new items, you should always sign in to UR Library Search and bookmark direct from there. This avoids the risk of directing students to items we do not hold, as the Add Resource search option is not restricted to the UR Library catalogue.

Digitisation, Accessibility and Copyright

The Library provides digitisations under the Higher Education Copyright Licensing Agency (CLA) agreement to improve student accessibility to teaching materials. We do this by embedding the digitisations directly into resource lists alongside other readings. In addition, all digitisations requested via the Library are screen reader-compatible.

As well as being copyright cleared, requesting digitisations via the Library ensures that the CLA can collect information about the licensed content users copy in order to pay royalties to these organisations and partners, who then distribute the money to their members, including authors, visual artists, and publishers.

What can be digitised?

The Library can digitise from print books or journal articles where they are not already provided in digital format by the Library. The book or journal must be listed on a current module resource list, and marked on the list as Essential reading.

Please note we only offer digitisations for items which have been marked as essential on the resource list. If you need to set the importance of an item on your resource list, please see Setting an Importance.

How much can be digitised?

We can digitise one chapter or up to 10% of the total number of pages, whichever is greater. However there are some exceptions, usually where a title has been published overseas, e.g. in the US. We will always check copyright permissions before we digitise and will get in touch with you if there are any problems. You can also have a look at CLA website to see what can be copied or scanned under the CLA Higher Education License.

Digitisation Service for Disable Students (DSDS)

We also offer a Digitisation Service for Disabled Students (DSDS) which provides teaching and learning materials in an accessible format to students who are visually impaired or those who cannot physically manipulate a book. This is arranged with the student via the Disability Service.

Requesting a Digitisation

  • Go to your resource list and locate the book you want to request a digitisation from and click on the three dots next to the item. If the item is not already on your resource list, you will need to add it on first, see Bookmarking eBooks and Books.
  • You can also request digitisations for individual journal articles where we do not subscribe to the journal. You will be able to bookmark these by expanding your search to 'Libraries Worldwide' and then bookmarking the article as normal(see Bookmarking Journal Articles)
  • Choose Request digitisation

  • You will then see a pop-up box appear with details of the digitisation you are requesting. Please check through the information and add in any missing details - particularly the chapter or section name and the page range. You can add multiple page ranges by clicking add another.
Please note we are unable to process digitisations without page numbers.
  • Once you have finished with this screen please click next at the bottom.

A screenshot of the fields required to submit a digitisation request.

  • You will then see a new screen which asks for details of the date the digitisation is needed by.
Please request digitisations with as much notice as possible, and at least two weeks before they are needed.
  • Click Next at the bottom of the screen, and check your details on the following screen. Then click Next again to submit your digitisation request.

If there are any problems with your request the team will be in touch with you via email.
