For December in the run-up to the seasonal break, our Spotlight shines on the PressReader newspaper and magazine app. Our colleague Sam Spier from Wellbeing Services has selected some titles to help you make the most of this time for rest, relaxation and general wellbeing. Read the full post here

Our November spotlight shone on Kanopy, just one of the film streaming services that you can access as a member of the Library. See the Spotlight blog post for details of the documentaries, feature films, television series, curated collections and much more, freely available to you wherever you may be.

In October, we highlighted Statista, a top online database for statistics, market research and business insights. It's an excellent tool for finding data like consumer surveys, market trends, and industry reports to strengthen your assignments, or for using infographics to make your presentations more engaging. Summer Book Moves

The Library team has been busy moving books over the summer, and the collections now start on the First Floor (with the exception of recent copies of our print journals which can be found at the front of the Ground Floor). We are in the process of updating the signage to reflect the new locations, but as always, if there are any books you can't locate, just ask a member of the Library team. You can Text for Library Help on 07723 954 232, or Contact Us here

Our new Subject Guides (see below) now list all the relevant shelf locations for print books, so you can easily find books in your subject on the library shelves as well as online.

Take a look at the newly updated Library Subject Resources Guides. These specialist guides are your go-to resource for finding the best books, journals, databases, and websites for your subject. They are packed with essential tools and tips to help you ace your research and assignments, all in one convenient place.

New website! For the child in your life - or the child in you! If you love children's books, check out the School Experience Collection on the First Floor of the library. The collection includes a wide range of children's books for all ages (picture books, fiction, poetry and non-fiction) and other items (such as toys, games and puppets) that can be borrowed by all students.

Current Displays...

To celebrate the Festive Season we have a lovely display of our Christmas books in the Foyer, and on the First Floor you can find a snapshot of some Christmas themed films and magazines you can access through our film streaming service Kanopy and the PressReader app. PressReader provides online access to literally thousands of global magazines, on everything from music, film and photography to pets, travel, cooking, health and fitness, sport etc…whatever your interests, in whatever part of the world, there is likely to be something there for you to enjoy over the holidays!

Southlands College are running their London Life initiative again this year to help students make the most of the cultural and social activities London has to offer. The current focus is on London Museums, and to tie in with the project we have a display of the Library's exhibition catalogues from the V&A Museum. Have a look at our Featured Collection Resource List to browse the rest of our collection of Museum and Gallery Exhibition Catalogues.

Library displays highlight key historical, social, or awareness events, showcase academic work, and promote university events or societies. If you have a display idea, fill out the Display and Exhibition Space Booking Form. Missed a display? Check out the online Archive of Displays for some of our previous themes.

The Library's collections hold so much more than just books for your studies. Our Featured Collections are curated lists to support events and themes such as Wellbeing, LGTBQ+, Women's History Month and Black Lives Matter.

We also have lots of Film, Video & TVImage and Audio resources to enhance your understanding and research.

Library Study Zones

We have been busy making improvements to the Library spaces over the summer break. For this academic year, we have introduced distinct study zones to help you make the best use of our stunning spaces:

  • Library Cafe, Ground Floor and First Floor are Group Study Zones. Please collaborate quietly and be mindful of noise. You may eat in these zones, but snacks only (no hot food).
  • Second Floor is the Whisper Floor. Study individually or in pairs, and keep talk to a whisper. Snack food only.
  • Third Floor is Whisper Area (in the atrium) and Silent Study Space (Hilda Laing Room). The Hilda Laing Room with its glorious views over London is now for all students to use for silent, individual study. No food allowed, and please keep your phone on silent or use headphones.
  • There is a dedicated study room for Postgraduate Students (room 1.22)  on the First Floor by the central stairs.
  • Don't forget you can also Book a Study Room for group study, up to one week in advance.

A dolls house and a Womble toy in display case

Earlier this year, our Archives staff, students and academics took part in the local council’s Wandsworth Heritage Festival. Items from the Wandsworth Museum were researched and prepared by students from the School of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, for the special exhibition  ‘A Wandsworth Childhood’ which we hosted in the Library. This exhibition will now be displayed permanently in Wandsworth’s new Children's Hub at 166 Roehampton Lane, next to Downshire House. The Roehampton Children’s Hub will be officially opened on the 3rd October 2024.

Snapshot from the Archives

Our regular blog features special items from the different College archives.

For November we mark Disability History Month with a look back at the Braille Circle established by members of the Froebel Educational Institute's Michaelis Guild in 1909. The Guild provided books in Braille for disadvantaged children, and later for First World War veterans, with visual impairment. Read the full post here

In October, for Black History Month, our Archivists tell the stories of students who came here from West Africa in the 1930s and 40s and went on to achieve great things, and a Trinidad-born teacher who came to Whitelands in 1921 to teach for the next twenty years.
