Resource Updates

Financial Times to be replaced by ProQuest One Business

From August the Library will provide access to ProQuest One Business. This subscription includes access to most of the content from the Financial Times and The Economist, for which we will be cancelling  our individual subscriptions. More details: FT to be replaced by ProQuest One Business.

Changes to MyEBSCO personal accounts

Staff and students who have references saved in a personal My Ebsco account will need to transfer them to RefWorks before Friday 18th July, if they don’t want to lose them. For further guidance, see Changes to MyEBSCO personal accounts.

Library Displays...

Our latest displays have plenty of inspiration for summer reads, including our selection of Quick Reads for anyone short on time.

Missed a past library display, or can't come to campus? Have a look at our online Archive of Displays to see some of our previous themes.

Library displays can be used to mark key historical, social or national awareness events, display academic work and achievements, and to promote societies or other University events. If you have an idea for a future library display, you can complete our Display and Exhibition Space Booking Form.

Archives News

Wandsworth Heritage Festival: Arts at University of Roehampton

For the third consecutive year, the University and College Archives are participating in the Wandsworth Heritage Festival. We invite everyone from across the Wandsworth borough—and beyond—to discover the University’s rich heritage through our archives.

In response to this year’s festival theme, Art, the Froebel and Whitelands Archives will be hosting two special events. These events form part of the wider London Borough of Culture programme, celebrating the unique artistic and educational legacies preserved within our collections.

Using its extensive collection of student work, the Froebel Archive will present a talk and workshop on 18th June exploring Froebel’s Principles of the Gifts and Occupations and their influence on the art world of the early 20th century. Spoiler alert—participants will have the chance to tap into their own creativity during the session. All welcome, the event is free but booking is required: email archives@roehampton.ac.uk.

On 23rd June, the Whitelands College Archive will lead a guided tour on the Art and Artefacts of Whitelands College, showcasing works by renowned figures such as William Morris, Edward Burne-Jones, John Ruskin, Kate Faulkner, George Frederic Watts, Omar Ramsden and Alwyn Carr, Anna Richards Brewster, Douglas Chandor, Arthur George Walker, Oswald Hornby, and Joseph Birley.
All welcome, the event is free but booking is required: email wcarchives@roehampton.ac.uk.

Please see the Wandsworth Heritage Festival programme for full details.

Snapshot from the Archives

Our regular blog features special items from the different College archives, sometimes marking important occasions and events. For the July snapshot, we celebrate the summer with a look back at the pioneering work of Froebel and Southlands Colleges to promote a love of nature and the Great Outdoors.

Outdoor teaching and learning, both for children and for students of their education, has always been integral to Froebelian teaching methods. From 1910 onwards, Froebel Educational Institute ran summer holiday homes in the countryside for underprivileged children. And in the 1930s, Southlands College staff and students were involved in the creation of open-air schools for inner city children believed to be at risk of developing tuberculosis.

In May, we celebrated the 80th anniversary of VE Day on 8th May with some wartime recollections from former students. These accounts provide a vivid impression of the many challenges they faced, as well as the joyful VE Day celebrations in London and the conditions they found here on their return.  Read the full post here

And finally....we are delighted to report that TWO of our wonderful archivists were honoured with awards at this year's Southlands Celebration Dinner on 6th May! Gilly King, Southlands College Archives Historian received the Susanna Wesley award, whilst Kornelia Cepok, University Archivist, received the Library Team award. Congratulations and well done Gilly and Kornelia!
