With the seasonal break coming up, perhaps it’s time to take a breather from your studies or research and catch up on some leisure reading. Did you know that as well as providing all of the essential reading and viewing for your assignments, the Library also provides you with a wealth of resources for your leisure interests? We have a Leisure Reading collection of novels and biographies, cook books and more for you to browse at your leisure in the Library café, or online via our dedicated Resource Lists. You can also explore our extensive literature collections on the Third Floor, and the children's books in our School Experience Collection. There are film, TV and music streaming services including Kanopy and BFI Player (and even a collection of physical DVDs!). And as well as all this there is the PressReader app, which provides online access to many daily newspapers and literally thousands of global magazines, on everything from music, film and photography to pets, travel, cooking, health and fitness, sport…whatever your interests, in whatever part of the world, there is likely to be something there for you to enjoy over the holidays.
Self-care and wellbeing are critical at all times, and the festive downtime is an ideal opportunity for some rest and recreation. Sam Spier, one of our wonderful Wellbeing Assistants, recommends the following titles you can enjoy via PressReader (see our FAQ for tips on how to access and install the app).
GOOD FOOD
Sam says:
"I would recommend this magazine to anyone who enjoys cooking and thinking up new recipes! Eating well and enjoying a balanced diet are so important for your overall wellbeing, and this magazine is packed with new and exciting recipes, as well as sweet treats, which everyone needs every now and again! Cooking can also be a very mindful activity- why not have a go at a new recipe, or try a twist on something you already like?"
An ideal choice for the festive feasting season!
THE SIMPLE THINGS
Sam says:
"This is the magazine equivalent of a cozy cup of tea by the fire. The Simple Things is a beautiful magazine all about slowing down and making the most out of the things you already have. Each issue is full of ideas, recipes and craft ideas to get you thinking mindfully. In this December edition, I especially like the December tips, and the article on simple, cost effective ways to give this holiday season."
WOMEN'S RUNNING
Sam says:
"Movement is always great for your wellbeing, and all of us in the team advocate for enjoyable forms of exercise. Personally, I have found a lot of joy in running recently, especially now it’s a bit colder, as I am able to be in nature, get my blood pumping, and clear my head ready for the day. This magazine has some great tips for women who might want to start running and has tips for beginners, as well as advice for more advanced runners."
PSYCHOLOGIES
Sam Says:
"This magazine is bursting with all sorts of amazing resources aimed at improving your wellbeing! From dating, to learning how to boost your confidence, there is sure to be something in this magazine that will help you feel your absolute best! I especially liked the article in this magazine about psychological immunity and how learning to boost your mental wellbeing can help with resilience, mood and sleep."
HEALTHIER SLEEP
Sam says:
"Everyone needs sleep- it’s one of the most fundamental aspects of feeling mentally well. Getting a good sleep routine, and being able to get good quality sleep can help with concentration, tiredness, aid in recovery and help us feel happier. This magazine is chock full of tips, tricks and studies on how to sleep better. I especially enjoyed the article about prioritising sleep, even when we’re busy!"
Thank you Sam for these top magazine tips. We will all be hoping to catch up on some sleep over the festive break! Why not explore PressReader for more titles you can enjoy, not just during the holidays but throughout the year. International students may find titles published in your home country; and English language content can be translated into many other languages via the app. See our earlier Spotlight on PressReader for more information on how to get the most from this wonderful resource.
