PsycBooks is a database of full-text books and book chapters in Psychology published by APA (American Psychological Association) and others. It is updated monthly with newly published titles in the field of psychological research. Coverage includes the most current scholarly and professional titles published by APA, plus the database boasts an excellent range of historical and classic works from the behavioural and social sciences.

There are over 4,600 books and 69,000 book chapters held within the database, and these numbers grow each month!

PsycBooks covers a wide-range of behavioural and social sciences, including:

  • Behavioural Disorders
  • Cognitive Processes
  • Developmental Psychology
  • Educational Psychology
  • Experimental and Comparative Psychology
  • History and Systems
  • Industrial and Organizational Psychology
  • Mental Illness Treatment and Prevention
  • Neuroscience
  • Personality Psychology
  • Philosophy
  • Psychotherapy and Counselling
  • Social Processes and Social Issues

The resource can be most easily accessed via our A-Z Database List. Scroll down to "P" and click on the link through to PsycBooks, using your Roehampton username and password to log in.

Once you are on the database, you will see a standard search box with numerous options to search by title, author, year of publication, subject and many more fields.

Some recent additions to PsycBooks content in the past few months include:

Psychedelic-assisted Therapy by Shannon Dames, Andrew Penn, Monnica Williams, Joseph Zamaria, Tony Rousmaniere, and Alexandre Vaz

"The deliberate practice exercises in this book present role-playing scenarios in which two trainees act as a client and a therapist, switching back and forth under the guidance of a supervisor."

Psychological Approaches to the Treatment of Pediatric Obesity by Crystal S. Lim and E. Thomaseo Burton

"Pediatric obesity is a significant public health concern that currently affects 1 in 5 children and adolescents. This resource offers a comprehensive review of current research and theoretical approaches, as well as clear descriptions of effective strategies to prevent and treat pediatric obesity."

Structural Analysis of Social Behaviour (SASB) by Kenneth L. Critchfield and Lorna Smith Benjamin

"This book summarizes over 50 years of research and clinical practice with SASB, and demonstrates how it can be used with any therapeutic approach. SASB offers providers a therapy compass that helps clarify where the client is now, and pointing in the direction they need to go in order to reach their therapy goals."

Additionally, PsycBooks is hosted on the EBSCO platform, which has recently undergone an update to their user interface (you can find a Spotlight post on the new EBSCO platform via this link). Many of these new features enhance the searching experience considerably, and we highly recommend you take a few minutes to explore these before starting your search.

To use the new, enhanced personalisation features on EBSCO, you’ll first need to create a personal account. You’ll then have access to your dashboard, where you can create and manage projectsset up search alerts, and manage your saved results and searches. Detailed guidance is available on making the most of the dashboard, as well as  basic and advanced searchingapplying filters to your search, and bookmarking your results.

Another feature of the new user interface (UI) is enhanced translation options. Once you have created a personal account (see above), you can choose the language of the database interface. Then, when you come to view a search result, such as a journal article, in Online Full Text, you can translate the full text from English to one of over 110 available languages.

The text-to-speech function has also been enhanced in EBSCO’s new UI. Text-to-speech enables articles and passages to be read out loud via your device, and is available when opening publications in both Online Full Text and PDF views. You can set the playback speed, navigate to specific parts of the text, highlight portions of the read-aloud text, or download it as an MP3 file.

PsycBooks is a fantastic, popular resource within the relevant fields and we highly recommend taking time to acquaint (or re-acquaint!) yourself with this wonderful Library resource.
