Spotlight on: Counselling and Therapy in Video

by Ben Dickinson on 2024-01-09T16:51:00+00:00 in Psychology, Spotlight on Library Resources | 0 Comments

The Library provides you with access to a wide range of audiovisual streaming services, and this month we are promoting the Counselling and Therapy in Video collection, hosted on AlexanderStreet.com. This collection provides streamed film content in the contemporary fields of social work, psychotherapy, psychology and psychiatric counselling.

It can be easily located, either via our A-Z List of Databases or within the relevant Subject Resource Guides. Follow the link to the database and log in with your Roehampton credentials.

The collection is frequently refreshed, with updates to existing content as well as new films uploaded on a regular basis. At present count there are over 350 videos making up the collection, but this continues to grow on a seemingly weekly basis! Materials are curated and developed to meet the educational and research needs of a wide variety of counselling curricula and subjects, outlined below.

The range of content is also impressive. The majority of the videos (around 60% of the total) are instructional materials or recordings of counselling sessions. These are indexed in fine detail, so that you can   search for the most niche counselling terms or approaches and still find plenty of material.

The collection is quite comprehensive and accessible; over 50% of films are just 60 minutes or under, making them ideal for research and educational use. When first accessing the database, the content is sorted automatically to show ‘Newest arrivals” at the top; you can change this by clicking here to select other sort options, including displaying in order of Title, Release Date of the Content (newest or oldest), or Relevancy (where a specific search  term has been entered).

You also have a rage of filtering options for the content, including by Subject (whether broad or niche), Content Type (ranging from lectures and documentaries to counselling sessions and interviews, amongst others), Release Date or Video Duration. Searching the database is quite straightforward and intuitive, as it is quick to respond and load videos, allowing you to browse the content seamlessly. The platform streams films easily, so there is little or no memory drain on your computer or device.

------

These video resources are unique in their specialist subject coverage, and just as valuable as our conventional print collections. The Counselling and Therapy in Video collection is available for all Roehampton students and staff, accessible from anywhere, anytime. Although the key subjects covered are psychology and psychotherapy, the content will be useful for a wide range of subjects, from mental health nursing to role play exercises, or character studies for creative writing, drama or film. Feel free to explore this fantastic resource and uncover something new for all your learning, teaching and research needs.
