Referencing is a standardised way of acknowledging the authors and sources you refer to in your assignments. Accurate referencing:
- Protects you from accusations of plagiarism and shows respect for the work of others.
- Demonstrates thorough research.
- Enables your readers to find the works you refer to.

Managing your References
Top tips for managing your references:
- Keep track of everything you have used – start compiling your reference list as soon as you start reading a document.
- Make accurate notes to distinguish your own words/ideas from the work of other people.
- Use a reference management tool such as RefWorks, which the Library subscribes to and provides support with. RefWorks, and other reference management tools, offer a place to save and manage your references online. You can export directly from the library search results page and from databases into these tools, as well as generate bibliographies in different referencing styles.
