Referencing at University of Roehampton

RefWorks - Reference Manager

RefWorks is reference management software that allows you to:

  • save references from sources such as eJournals, databases, library catalogues and websites

  • compile your own collection of references and organise them into folders

  • insert correctly formatted citations into your documents

  • automatically create final reference lists and bibliographies

RefWorks is cloud based and can be used anywhere you have a WiFi connection. It is funded by the Library and is free to Roehampton students and staff (and alumni).

NOTE:  RefWorks may not be completely accurate in the citations and references that it generates as it is an automated process. Students should check the citations and references that are generated to ensure that they are accurate before submitting work.

Getting Started with RefWorks

Creating an account

Anyone at the University of Roehampton can create an account:

Click on the RefWorks links above and click the 'Create Account' link. (You'll find the link below the 'Use login from my institution' button.)

RefWorks login box with Create Account link below Institution Login

  1. Fill in your information - use your University of Roehampton email address. (You will not be able to sign up with a personal email address.)
  2. You will receive an email with a link to complete the registration process and activate your account.

Once you activate your account you’ll get access immediately and can get started adding and managing your references.

See our RefWorks Video Tutorials page for more guidance on all of RefWorks features.

Using RefWorks with Microsoft Word

Write-N-Cite is a utility that allows users to run RefWorks within Microsoft Word. This allows users to insert correctly-formatted citations in their documents, and generate reference lists based on citations used in a number of different referencing styles. Write-N-Cite is installed on all University computers, and can be downloaded for personal use on your own computer. More recent version of Word and Office may use the RefWorks Citation Manager plug-in instead of Write-N-Cite.

Detailed system requirements and guidance are available.

NoteTechnical issues mean that it is not possible to edit MS Word documents in New RefWorks if they have previously been edited with Legacy RefWorks.  Attempting to edit documents in both versions can cause documents to become corrupted. Users who have been editing documents using Legacy RefWorks should  not start using current RefWorks until these documents are completed.
