Unsure how to reference a book in Harvard, a journal article in APA, or an Act of Parliament in OSCOLA? Cite Them Right has the answers. A one-stop shop covering all the referencing styles used across Roehampton’s Schools, Cite Them Right provides in-depth guidance for referencing all sorts of publications, from books and journal articles to social media posts and podcasts.

Using Cite Them Right

Cite Them Right is best accessed via the link on the Library’s Referencing & Academic Integrity webpage. Sign in with your usual university details and you will be able to access Roehampton’s Cite Them Right subscription.

Once in Cite Them Right, click on ‘Choose Referencing Style’ (in the top banner or the middle of the homepage) and select the style relevant to you. (Unsure which style you need to use? See our handy guide to Referencing Styles by School/Programme/Subject).

The guidance for each referencing style is arranged by categories of publications – you will see several broad categories, such as ‘Books’, ‘Journals’ and ‘Digital and Internet’, each of which is made up of a number of subcategories. You will also find useful guidance articles on the right-hand side of each style’s landing page.

Click on any subcategory – for example ‘Printed books’ or ‘Journal articles’ – and you will be presented with detailed guidance on how to reference that specific type of publication in your chosen style. Each guidance page is made up of a number of examples of both in-text citations and corresponding full references.

You can also use the ‘You try’ boxes on the right-hand side to create your own references matching the style guidance (see the bottom right-hand side of the below screenshot).

Note: On some guidance pages you will see a ‘Message from My Institution’ in the top left. These notes give extra guidance where options are indicated in the main body of the page.

You can also navigate Cite Them Right by browsing categories of publications (see the ‘Browse Categories’ option in the top banner) or searching by keyword (via the main search box on the homepage). However, using either of these options will produce results that relate to various referencing styles, so make sure that any guidance page you find this way is applicable to the referencing style you’re using.

Try the Tutorials

If you’re new to referencing or using a particular referencing style, try Cite Them Right’s interactive tutorials on topics such as ‘when to reference’, ‘understanding and avoiding plagiarism’, ‘paraphrasing and summarising’ and ‘how to set out citations, quotations and references’.

To try the tutorials click on the ‘Tutorial’ option in the top banner, click ‘launch tutorial’, and then select the referencing style that is relevant to you.

To save your progress with the tutorials, as well as try an assessment to check your understanding, you’ll need to create a personal account using your Roehampton email address. To do that, click on ‘Sign in to your personal account’ in the top banner, then click on ‘Sign up now’ and enter your details. You’ll be sent an email by Bloomsbury to verify your new account – make sure to check your junk folder for it and click on the verification link that it contains.
